- Abstract
Every day there are several articles submitted on the English language Wikipedia that are not in English, currently most get deleted very quickly, probably some get deleted out of process without translation. An estimated two thirds meet the speedy deletion criteria once translated, so as with many new contributors their first edits are not up to standard.
In this discussion we will share experiences from other languages as to how widespread this is and seek consensus for a better solution
- Detailed proposal
Ideally if you try to save text in the wrong language for a mediawiki site the software should give you the option of having your edit migrated to that language's site. But that would require Mediawiki programming changes.
It would be technically possible to give newpage patrollers and others a template that they could add to an article, for people with language skills to assign the relevant language, and then for a bot to migrate it to the relevant language wiki and inform the author.
In this discussion, and using the multi wiki multilanguage potential of Wikimania, we will discuss:
Is this just a phenomenon on the English language Wikipedia, is it on other languages or other projects?
How do other language communities view the people who start by contributing to English Wikipedia in the wrong language, are they strays who need to be redirected to you or merely spammers?
This discussion starts now and will continue through Wikimania or until we finalise a spec and launch a bot or decide it isn't worth it. If you have a view on this or know how your project is affected by wrong language submmissions then please contribute here or on the talkpage - don't feel you have to wait until Hong Kong!
