Abstract

A number of powerful anti-disruption and protective tools are provided for our communities on the Wikimedia clusters. These tools are crucial for the community to fight against spam, disruptive behaviour and large-scale vandalism, and dealing with private information or other, less-common situations. These vital tools, in combatting or preventing abuse and large-scale negative actions, ensure that our wikis' communities are not overwhelmed.

In this workshop, stewards, functionaries, bureaucrats and sysops from all our wikis and other interested users can discuss their needs and issues with the Wikimedia Foundation's product manager and developers for these tools.

Detailed proposal

A number of powerful anti-disruption and protective tools are provided for our communities on the Wikimedia clusters. These tools are crucial for the community to fight against spam, disruptive behaviour and large-scale vandalism, and dealing with private information or other, less-common situations. These vital tools, in combatting or preventing abuse and large-scale negative actions, ensure that our wikis' communities are not overwhelmed.

It is important that the Wikimedia Foundation's developers, and the third party and community developers who spend time on the various “admin tools” for MediaWiki are guided by a proper understanding of the needs of our various users, both on Wikimedia's wikis but also more widely.

In this workshop, stewards, functionaries, bureaucrats and sysops from all our wikis and other interested users can discuss their needs and issues with the Wikimedia Foundation's product manager and developers for these tools. We will cover with participants the work recently done, that currently undertaken, and a forward look to potential future items that will either impact admin tools directly, or will be of significant interest and relevance to the tools' users.

The intended outcomes are:

  • a better understanding for administrators and other users of what is being done;
  • a better understanding for WMF and others of what admin tools users are doing;
  • a more informed set of overall priorities and issues for the 'admin tools' work; and
  • a stronger, better-defined prioritisation of issues and features to be worked on.

Rough agenda (to flex as needs require):

00:00 – 00:05 : Introduction and overview of existing tools
00:05 – 00:15 : Overall discussion of future plans and resourcing
00:15 – 00:30 : Specific discussion on current roadmap items
00:30 – 00:45 : General discussion of other options
00:40 – 00:45 : Conclusion and action items for WMF and others
