Abstract

Slaving away, often unnoticed, but frequently feeling very alone, Wikimedia functionaries (Oversighters, Checkusers, Arbitration Committee Members, Ombudsmen, and the like) are expected to do a tremendous amount of work to safeguard the projects and their content. They sometimes make life or death decisions, and frequently endure withering abuse. But they're not alone. This workshop will share best practices, and inform functionaries from all language versions as to what the Foundation can do to provide support. All functionaries are invited to attend.

Detailed proposal

Slaving away, often unnoticed, but frequently feeling very alone, Wikimedia functionaries (Oversighters, Checkusers, Arbitration Committee Members, Ombudsmen, and the like) are expected to do a tremendous amount of work to safeguard the projects and their content. They sometimes make life or death decisions, and frequently endure withering abuse. But they're not alone. This workshop will share best practices, and inform functionaries from all language versions as to what the Foundation can do to provide support. All functionaries are invited to attend. The workshop will be led by Philippe Beaudette, (the Foundation's Director of Community Advocacy), Geoff Brigham (General Counsel), and their all-star team. This will be a practical "sharing your stories" and "what can we do to help" type of discussion, which will inform the Legal and Community Advocacy team as they set priorities for the next year.
