Abstract

The aim of the following proposal is to show the results of the grant project users Micru and Aubrey were assigned to for the development of a vision for Wikisource. A partial list of the topics that will be discussed includes:

  • Metadata schema and integration with Wikidata
  • New image/book uploader
  • Integration and interoperability with other free degital libraries (Internet Archive, Open Library)
  • Update of ongoing Google Summer of Code projects
  • Results of ongoing Requests of Comments regarding Wikisource and other sister projects

The presentation will update the community on the partial results of the grant project, and engage for coping with unsolved issues.

Detailed proposal

The grant projects is focusing at the same time on various topics and issues.

A partial list of the topics that will be discussed includes:

  • Metadata schema and integration with Wikidata

Wikidata will allow us to make our book database available to the world, and so other servers can understand that a certain book is the same they want, we need to use common book identifiers. For modern books that will be the ISBN, for older books we'll have to append to our book data OCLC or LCC number. Wikidata:Books task force has been created as a working group on these topics.

  • New image/book uploader

It's a long known problem that uploading books on Wikisource is difficult, especially because users need to pass through a different project, Commons. Even if it's not possible to undertake big modifications, the current Commons uploader allows for some scripting that doesn't need code review.

  • Integration and interoperability with other free degital libraries

It will be reported the up-date-status on possible partnerships and joint projects with projects and association as Internet Archive, Open Library, Open Knowledge Foundation.

  • Update of ongoing Google Summer of Code projects

There are a number of proposals, of both mentors and students, in various GSoC projects regarding Wikisource.

  • Results of ongoing Requests of Comments regarding Wikisource and other sister projects

Moreover, there could be reporting on:

  • Text exporting: update on the EPUB converter created by Tpt.
  • Metadata exporting: Wikisource has an OAI-PMH beta export tool which uses the data in the index pages. It will have to be modified to be able to export metadata from Wikidata once the system is ready.
  • Wikisource Association: it is our interest to propose the community to develop a Wikisource user group.
