Abstract

Music comes to Wikipedia! Since April 2013, the Score extension is active on all Wikimedia wikis. In my presentation I want to explore the possibilities of adding scores to Wikipedia articles and other Wikimedia projects. Where would scores be a good idea? What are the copyright issues that need to be considered? And, of coures: how can we actually write scores? I'll take you through the basic syntax, some more elaborate example and show you the possibilites of external editing.

Detailed proposal

Music comes to Wikipedia! Since April 2013, the Score extension is active on all Wikimedia wikis. The extension allows us to enter music notation to articles as well as play the music and export it in different formats. It opens a whole new world of knowledge in Wikimedia projects. In my presentation I want to explore the possibilities of adding scores to Wikipedia articles and other Wikimedia projects. The use of scores in Wikipedia will be different from Wikisource or Commons. There are several different use cases, amon them quotes, whole pieces of music, original work, and more. Together with the participants, we'll elaborate on use cases. Where do we actually see it in action? What are the copyright issues that need to be considered? And, of course: how can we actually write scores? I'll take you through the basic syntax of writing simple melodies. Moreover, we'll explore some more elaborate examples and notation requirements, complex systems and meta data. When notation gets too complex, there are external tools. I'll show you the possibilites of external editing using graphical interfaces. At the end of the session, you should have a good idea of when to use scores, where to contribute and how to do it.
