Small wikis face several challenges on their growth journey. Using the experience from Telugu Wikipedia, various strategies for nurturing the wikipedias are presented. These include Handling input method issues, Formulating policies, Promoting the wikipedia in print/electronic media/offline events, organising Wiki Academies, Adopting tools such as Hotcat, Twinkle to automate mediawiki tasks, Use of bots for improving the wikipedia.

Small wikis face several challenges on their growth journey. Using the experience from Telugu Wikipedia, various strategies for nurturing the wikipedias are presented. These include handling input method issues, formulating policies, promoting the wikipedia in print/electronic media/offline events, organising Wiki Academies, adopting tools such as Hotcat, Twinkle to automate Mediawiki tasks and use of bots for improving the wikipedia.
Telugu Wikipedia was started in Dec 2003 and experienced period of rapid, mild, little growth during its life. I have played a part for about 6 years in various roles from a member to Admin. I have experienced the challenges firsthand and was involved in enabling the editors to come together to formulate plans and accomplish them. I will share the lessons learnt from that experience, which could be highly relevant to other small wikipedias.
