Abstract

The community of greek (el) wikipedia started late to be organised and support outreach efforts. It will be presented that leaving room to third parties to represent the community can completely disorganise it and make future activities harder. So, the community should organise as soon as it can be organised.

Detailed proposal

The community of greek (el) wikipedia started late to be organised and support outreach efforts. Third party NGOs filled the gap as a point of contact for the public, about wikipedia, with their own presence. A campaign organised by an NGO, initially supported by the community, led to the creation of wrong impressions to the general public and complete disappointment of the community. The NGOs were working with their own ideas, taking care only about PR and numbers of workshops and participants and not the content of workshops, or even the content of printed handouts as they were not seeking the advice of the community. The results included workshops held by non-wikipedians that had no clue about wikipedia, public organisations communicating with “Wikipedia” meaning with the third party NGO. Worst result, a community that did not like to support any more outreach activities or is suspicious of any other third party. It will be presented that leaving room to third parties to represent the community, can completely disorganise it and make future activities harder. So, the community should organise as soon as it can be organised.
