Abstract
Established and aspiring women scientists are an untapped resource for the Wikimedia movement and could be invaluable to fixing the gender gap and systemic bias issues. In this presentation I will be sharing my experiences working with women scientists (along with some success stories of their participation) and suggestions for getting women scientists on board with various projects. I will also be sharing the mission of WikiProject Women Scientists and explain why it is a crucial project.
Detailed proposal
Established and aspiring women scientists are an untapped resource for the Wikimedia movement and could be invaluable to fixing the gender gap and systemic bias issues. In this presentation I will be sharing my experiences working with women scientists (along with some success stories of their participation) and suggestions for getting women scientists on board with various projects. Obviously, bringing more women into the projects is a positive end of this, but by recruiting women scientists actively, we can also acquire dedicated expert editors in the sciences, who are desperately needed across the projects. One-on-one or one-on-few discussion and hands-on teaching is, I believe, the best way to get women hooked on the project; I will give some methods for making these kinds of interactions happen. Furthermore, I will report on WikiProject Women Scientists, an initiative on English Wikipedia founded by myself and Sarah Stierch to collaborate, improve the existing articles on women scientists, and create articles on the literally thousands of notable scientists that are missing from Wikipedia. We have already made some significant headway on this.
