Abstract
Lodewijk and Nicole will give you a bird's-eye view of a selection of the coolest projects of the Wikimedia Chapters in the past year. Be inspired by creativity and community work from all over the world, and transfer the enthusiasm and ideas to your communities back home. In 70 minutes, you will learn about more than 30-40 projects run by Wikimedia Chapters.
Detailed proposal

Wikimedia Chapters run awesome projects and programmes, all year long. Most of which, you will never hear about. Just like in 2011 and 2012, we will give the Wikimaniacs an overview of the coolest of these projects. The overview includes topics like tips to be successful and things to better avoid, people and movement money involved, target groups or goals. Our goal is to inspire the audience: We hope that they learn from these projects, replicate or improve them and come up with their own ideas.

We do not aim to give the full picture, or every nuance, but just want to touch shortly on many projects. The audience should leave this presentation with much enthusiasm and a better understanding of what is possible with the great volunteer communities and organisations we are. We want to show a wide range of projects – some with little allocated resources, and some that require more.

This session should be a great start of the first day for every Wikimaniac, and offers a proper chance to point people to more sources of information, contact persons and following presentations. The session aims to show some 30-50 (depending on the submissions and complexity) different projects in 45-60 minutes. The remaining time is reserved for some questions and answers – both to us on the stage, and to possible representatives of the projects that might be present.

To make our efforts sustainable, we will prepare an overview of all projects and contact persons as a handout. We will also try to connect as many like-minded chapter folks as possible via an interactive atmosphere.

Track
  • Cultural and Education Outreach (a large number of the projects likely touches on this)
  • WikiCulture and Community
  • Analysis and Public Engagement (some will touch on this)
  • Technology and Infrastructure (Some will touch on this)
Length of presentation/talk
50-75 minutes. We would like a full slot, including discussion time.
Language of presentation/talk
English
Will you attend Wikimania if your submission is not accepted?
Nicole will definitely participate. Lodewijk's participation depends only on scholarship approval.
Slides or further information (optional)
You can find the slides & video recording of the 2011 and 2012 presentation (comparable) here:
Special requests
Please schedule as the first presentation on the first day. That way we can refer people for projects to more detailed presentations later in the schedule.
