Wikimania 2013 – Chapters Village

Wikimania is an unique opportunity to take real profit from being part of the global movement. Encouraged by the organisers and several chapters, there will be a Chapters Village as THE place to be for interested parties. The Village will be the perfect opportunity for chapters to present their work, exchange knowledge, talk, inform, socialise and have fun.

Feedback

We have gathered all feedback (given on paper or online) an written a short summary: "Generally, the idea of having a Chapters' Village as a central point to meet/contact/exchange information (e.g. on chapters' work) and chat was liked by the majority of people participating in the survey. The location chosen seemed perfect in the sense that it was centrally located, but almost everyone noted that the heat and climate was hard to bear. Additionally, the lack of tables/space for eating and taking in meals was criticised. Quite a few people were bothered by the overlap between the session schedules and attending the Chapters' Village/Meet-Up sessions during the breaks. Smaller chapters with fewer staff could not attend to their tables at all times. It was suggested that the Chapters' Village and the Meet-Ups should be included in the general Wikimania programme and be promoted more actively in advance. Except two people, everyone agreed that the Chapters' Village should continue at future Wikimanias: More participating chapters and affiliates were wished for as well as more activities in the Chapters' Village.
We will take all this feedback into account when talking to the Wikimania 2014 organising team. We'd love to take the Chapters' Village to the next level in London and are already in touch with Ed and James about it."
--Nicole Ebber (WMDE) (talk) 16:41, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it awesome for the chapters?

  • We are one movement: Chapters as an open, integral part of the Wikimedia movement - let’s do something together!
  • We want to exchange and support exchanging ideas, inspiration and experience.
  • We want to inform the chapters and the communities about our initiatives and projects and encourage them to get involved.
  • We want to get feedback (best practice, worst practice) to improve our work in the future.

How, where and when will we do it?

Logo Square

The Chapters Village will be in a pretty big glass-covered outdoor space in the Logo Square (which will also be the catering area).

  • It will be “open” from Friday until Sunday, during regular conference hours.
  • In terms of logistic, the Chapters Village will consist of info-tables (preferably one per Chapter) and a small meet-up space with six to eight tables for speed geeking, office hours or meet-ups.
  • Big (really big!) LCD screen where you can show slides, photos, information or movies from your Chapter or programme announcements. Please note that there will be no audio available.
  • From the venue's management: all music and stage performance should be carried out from 12:30p.m. to 2:00p.m. only. Please keep music down during other hours to avoid complaints.
  • The Friendly space policy applies to the Chapters Village, too.

Present Chapters

Follow the links to the detailed description of each chapter's presence in the Chapters Village. Your chapter is not listed yet? Go ahead and add your plans.

Programme: Join in! Things we can do together

During the conference, we will distribute a printed programme flyer with information about the Chapters Village and the sessions and meet-ups (including all those that were added here before the end of June 2013).

You can add and find longer descriptions of the sessions on the CV programme page. Find an update about the setting, programme, LCD and other logistics on the talk page.

Friday, 9 August

Speed Geeking

Friday, 9 August, afternoon coffee break: 15:30–16:00

It will take place in a standing still position, people will gather around a couple of persons who will give short inputs on different topics at the same time. This will create several “geeking” groups. After 5 minutes talk there will be an acoustic signal and the group will move to the next person, circulating between the persons giving talks. See last year’s description for more information about Speed Geeking.

  • GLAM on tour – scaling nationwide (Barbara Fischer, WMDE)
  • The first edit (Manuela Kanneberg)
  • Chapter's peer review (Charles Andres, WMCH/WCA)
  • The story of JoburgpediA and collaboration of chapters (Dumisani Ndubane, WMZA)
  • Roomberg Education Program (Ziko van Dijk, WMNL/WCA)
  • Wikimedia and science (Daniel Mietchen)

Old English Tea Party (WMUK)

We'll be bringing tea and biscuits. Top hats are optional.

Friday, 9 August, after the talks (~17:30) After the talks on Friday Wikimedia UK will host AN OLD ENGLISH TEA PARTY. This won't be totally traditional (the weather will be too hot for 'builder's tea) but there will be Iced Tea and a selection of the best of British biscuits and cakes.

Open meet-ups

The official meet-ups will only take place during the breaks, we do not want to establish a "counter programme" to the official schedule. But of course, the meet-up space can be used throughout the conference for small presentations, discussions and private talks. You can either add some times and dates here, or do it spontaneously on site.
