Talk:Submissions/Multilingual Wikimedia Commons - What can we do about it

From Wikimania 2013 • Hong Kong

Very interesting, too bad I won't attend Wikimania. I think this would deserve a whole slot, or maybe to be followed by a workshop to elaborate a specific plan. I suppose there won't be time to also discuss conversion of all the templates and scripts (autotranslate, langswitch, language select, anonymousi18n)? I think Commons would be particularly interested in hearing how to best deal with them, but of course nobody like them knows their own tools well enough. I've notified Commons. --Nemo 10:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search includes interlanguage links

Because more than hundreds of thousands categories on Commons have interlanguage links, that are updated by bots, it would already be a great help if the search engine would interlanguage links, which is not the case (Try searching Fiets on en:wikipedia; one will find the article, not the category. ). --91.183.161.194 11:06, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When hovering over interlanguage or wikipedia links, the first paragraph of the related article or category could be shown. --91.183.161.194 11:08, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're missing a verb: the search engine would... what? Search their text or follow them? Searching would require usage of wikidata search, the other would perhaps mean bugzilla:44420? Then there's the question of how to make categories translatable... --Nemo 11:23, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it should read "if the search engine would include interlanguage links in its search database". If you find the link, you have the translation. bugzilla:30595 and probably another that I can't find as search doesn't work very well today .. --91.183.161.194 17:18, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More bugs

Some links: bugzilla:8287 and other Bug and feature requests related to Wikimedia Commons (the majority of them is probably multilingualism-related). --Nemo 15:15, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Crosslingual HotCat

While categories are essential information to allow people find relevant files, coming up with the correct category name is hard. It is especially true if you have to think in a second language. Could there be someling like a HotCat that allows crosslingual category suggestion? It would be really useful if one can enter a partial category name in his native language, get completion candidates in that language, select one and then the chosen one translated into English will be submitted to MediaWiki. Using Wikidata for getting article titles from Wikipedias instead of categories might be a starting point. --Whym (talk) 11:45, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
