Abstract

From 2012-2013 Wikimedia Sverige and Europeana, a network of European GLAM networks, have worked closely with a project entitled Europeana Awareness. Through the project we have organized different events trying to include Europeana's great collection of GLAM material into our projects.

Intentionally we focused on pushing for more interchapter cooperation and to get more cooperation with GLAMs started all over Europe. It has been an ambitious and overwhelming project with events focusing on everything from fashion to WWI as well as organizing an international photo contest called Wiki Loves Public Art in five countries! During the presentation our lessons learned and ideas for future cooperations will be presented.

Detailed proposal

Since 2012 Wikimedia Sverige and Europeana have worked closely together with a project entitled Europeana Awareness. Through the project we have organized different events trying to include Europeana's vast collection of GLAM material into our projects. Europeana is, as you might now, an aggregator for metadata from the GLAMs and is in the middle of a huge network with hundreds of GLAMs all over Europe and with millions of images that could be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons - making Europeana in many ways an ideal partner for this type of cooperation, but at least for the Swedish chapter also an unusual one. Europeana want more cooperation with Wikimedia Chapters in Europe and Europeana’s model is also influencing other organizations such as the Digital Public Library of America. We hope that this pilot can inspire other chapters and help them cooperate with these new type of Meta GLAMs.

We identified a number of different ways to raise awareness and interest for these collections both amongst the Wikimedians and the GLAMs; and we tried to organize as many different types of events as possible as the outcome then could be communicated to Europeana’s vast GLAM network. We organized events focusing on different themes and sizes with everything from a minor WWI edit-a-thon, to an enormous fashion edit-a-thon with nearly 50 participants, an edit-a-thon focusing on the end of the Cold War at an event filled with central political actors, to a parallel day of WWI edit-a-thons all over the world, to hackathons, to the GLAM-WIKI 2013 conference, to organizing a new international photo contest called Wiki Loves Public Art that already the first year took place in five countries. I would like to tell you about how these worked out and what we learned on the way.

Intentionally we focused on pushing for a lot of interchapter cooperation and to getting more cooperation with GLAMs initiated all over Europe. During the presentation our lessons learned and ideas for future cooperations between chapters, between chapters and Europeana and between chapters and GLAMs will be presented.

Wikimedia Sverige initially contacted chapters and volunteers all over Europe offering them our help and involvement in planned activities in their countries. We could work with them organizing the events, partly fund them, and give them new contacts through the Europeana network. We initially tried to connect ourselves to existing events but we also tried to organize events from the scratch with the help of the Europeana network.

As this was an EU-funded project, reporting is central and therefore our chapter now has a series of detailed reports focusing on what worked and what didn’t work with the different events; case studies that could give valuable insights also to other chapters. In this presentation a summary of all these will be presented..
